Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and civil rights activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs.

King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1929 and was raised in a middle-class family. He attended Morehouse College and later received a Ph.D. in theology from Boston University. In the 1950s, King became involved in the civil rights movement and quickly emerged as a leader.

King is perhaps best known for his role in the American civil rights movement, which sought to end segregation and discrimination against African Americans. He led a number of campaigns, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which was sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white person, and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which was attended by more than 250,000 people and where King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

King’s philosophy of nonviolence and civil disobedience inspired people around the world and helped to bring about significant social and political change. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, and he is remembered as one of the most influential figures in American history. King was assassinated in 1968, but his legacy lives on through his work to end segregation and discrimination and to promote civil rights and social justice.
