The Elephant and the Mallet – Panchatantra Story

Once upon a time, in a dense jungle, there lived an elephant and a mallet. The elephant was a majestic and powerful animal, with thick, gray skin and a long, curved tusk. He lived in a large herd and spent his days eating, bathing, and playing in the jungle.

The mallet, on the other hand, was a small, simple tool used for pounding and shaping objects. It was made of wood and had a flat, heavy head that was used for striking.

One day, as the elephant was out foraging for food, he stumbled upon a tree that had fallen across his path. Not wanting to be hindered by the obstacle, the elephant used his powerful trunk to lift the tree and move it out of the way.

As he was doing so, the mallet, which had been hidden beneath the tree, fell to the ground. The elephant, intrigued by the strange object, picked it up with his trunk and examined it.

The mallet, feeling scared and vulnerable, begged the elephant to put it down. “Please, mighty elephant,” it said. “I am just a simple tool, and I have no desire to be crushed or broken by your mighty strength.”

The elephant, feeling sorry for the little mallet, gently placed it back on the ground. “I apologize, little one,” he said. “I had no intention of harming you. I was simply curious about this strange object.”

The mallet, relieved, thanked the elephant and asked if there was anything it could do to repay him. The elephant, grateful for the mallet’s kindness, asked if it could help him build a new shelter for his herd.

The mallet, happy to oblige, used its flat head to pound the branches and leaves into place, while the elephant used his trunk and strength to lift and shape them. Together, they built a strong and sturdy shelter that would protect the herd from the hot sun and heavy rains.

Moral of the Story

This story teaches us that even the smallest and simplest of things can be of great help to others. The mallet may have been a small and seemingly insignificant object, but it was able to use its skills and abilities to assist the mighty elephant in building a new shelter. This story reminds us to never underestimate the power of kindness and willingness to help others, no matter how small or insignificant we may feel.
